Old Dog + New Tricks = Painful Joints!

We all know as we age we can’t do what we used to without paying for it. What once was a simple activity now have painful side effects. For Example: Throwing a ball at a picnic on a Saturday quite often means we need an ice pack and rest on Sunday. Working on your favorite hobby, squatting down pulling weeds out of the garden on a spring day will have you limping for days. Imagine the life of a dog. Jumping off the couch, climbing up and down steps, going out into the cold, sleeping on a hard floor, chasing a cat… as the dog ages they will feel the ill effects of these activities too. Luckily there is an all natural alternatives that can help our furry friends. The same CBD we trust and put in our body can be put in our pet’s body and offer them the same relief.

Not only do dogs suffer from joint pain, but many suffer from restlessness, scared of loud noises, scared of thunder, have cancer pain, seizures, loss of appetite, and some even show aggressive behavior. CBD oil may help each of these symptoms with your pet.

How Does CBD Alleviate So Many Symptoms?

Just like in humans, the dog’s endocannabinoid system contains 2 cannabinoid receptors… CB1 and CB2.

Most of the CB1 receptors are located in the brain and are associated with cognitive actions. These actions are related to coordination, mood, memory, and appetite. The CB2 receptors can be found in the immune system. This helps the receptors be more responsible for the body’s response to pain and inflammation. CBD impacts the CB2 receptors not by attaching to the CB2 receptor, but it triggers the body to make more of its own cannabinoids. This greatly impacts the body’s pain and inflammation responses. Less inflammation means less pain and increase of overall health. You will have one happy dog!

Which Oil Is Best For My Dog?

Just like the CBD for humans, the product made with the fewest most pure ingredients would be the better choice. Does the CBD come from a US Hemp Authority Certified Company? Are you buying actual CBD oil or are you purchasing Hemp Seed Oil? Which carrier oil is used in the product? What other filler ingredients are in it? Shop around and find the best product for your pet.

The dosage below is based on 250 mg bottle of CBD. You can put CBD Oil in your pet’s water or food.

  • Under 10 lbs = 1-2 drops (1/4-1/2 mg of CBD oil) twice daily
  • 11-20 lbs = 4-8 drops (1-2 mg of CBD oil) twice daily
  • 21-45 lbs= 8-12 drops (2–3 mg of CBD oil) twice daily
  • 46-74 lbs = 16-20 drops (4–5 mg of CBD oil) twice daily

Some companies offer CBD Dog Treats in addition to oil. With the CBD Dog Treats, they most commonly have 2.5 mg of CBD oil in each cookie. For small pets under 10 lbs you would use approximately 1/4 of a CBD treat to start. For small dogs up to 20 lbs, you would start with 1/2 a treat, for medium dogs you can start with 1 treat and for larger dogs, you can start with 1 to 2 treats.

Start with the minimum dose for a few days and see if symptoms improve. You will notice your pet may be more active, may cry or whimper less, or may behave better. If no visible improvement, increase dosage a drop at a time every few days and check for results.

The above symptoms and recommendations can be used for cats too. Regardless of the mammal we all have an endocannabinoid system and will all benefit from consuming CBD. If you have a hyper dog that won’t calm down, a dog or cat suffering from arthritis, or a dog that is terrified of thunder storms, CBD may be the solution to your pet’s discomfort.
